John Newbury began forging his career in fly tying and fishing at the age of 14 when he was hired to tie flies on a commercial basis for a small Colorado town sporting goods outfitter. That same summer, John started guiding wade trips along the small trout streams on the Front Range of the Rockies.
In his late teens, John left the trout world of Colorado for the rivers of the Pacific Northwest, most notably the Deschutes River where he focused on its prized steelhead and Native Redbands. The Deschutes River was home for many decades as John refined his tactical fly tying and nymphing skills. In the mid-1990’s, John shifted his focus to learning the European nymphing strategies popular across the pond.
Since relocating back to Colorado in 2014, John continues to modify his tactical nymphing approach and designing new fly patterns. Apart from making the endeavor of fly-fishing more enjoyable for his guests, John is currently writing his first fly tying book, drawing from his more than 40 years of experience in the field, uniquely combining his skills as a designer, photographer, scientist, and writer.

Raised in a small town in southern Indiana a love of fishing, hunting and wildlife was instilled in Joe at a young age. After 14 years in the Army he found Project Healing Waters and his curiosity in fly fishing and tying bloomed into a love and obsession. He started tying in November 2015, placed second in Project Healing Waters National Fly Tying Contest in 2017. Joe received the Everett Drake Fly Tying Award in 2018. Joe predominately ties flies for small and largemouth bass, with a focus on Deerhair bugs. His realistic art flies like the hummingbird, pheasant, Grinch, kingfisher and others have been sent across the globe. Joe currently lives with his wife and 4 children, all of whom share his love of fly fishing/tying. He believes the most important thing anyone in this industry can do is to get kids out on the water and behind a vise.

When I got back into fly fishing again, I thought That the best way to understand the bugs and patters would be to tie my own flies. I took a summer long course through Sundance Mountand Resort, was Instantly addicted. For me, tying is an escape that focuses on something so small and that only takes minutes from start to finish yet gives a real sense of accomplishment. tying has led to great friendships both on and off the water, and helps me feel more involved in the sport I can't fish as much as i'd like. When the occasion presents itself, I volunteer with he local Scout District, teaching the fishing merit badge and hosting fly tying nights for the boys and leaders. I started a goal a few years back of tying one fly a day, no matter if its as simple as a Zebra Midge or as complex as a 12 shank articulated fly. Bottom line is I try to get on the vise every day and try a new pattern or technique.

John started tying flies about 30+ years ago. Back when he started tying, it was mostly egg patterns for Great Lakes Steelhead. Then John met an individual from his hometown of Rahway NJ, Mr. George Kolesar. George was a commercial Tyer who used to supply some of the shops in Roscoe, NY - Trout Town USA, (Namely the Beaverkill Angler, when it was owned by Budge and Dot) with flies and Dyed materials. He taught John in the Catskill tradition of Fly Tying. John quickly graduated to other methods and styles of tying and soon he was coming up with his own unique patterns, such as JC's Electric Caddis Larva, JC’s Electric Caddis Pupa, The Electric Steelie Stone, the Peacock March Brown Dry Fly, among others.
John is also known for his unique Sculpin Patterns, that utilize Craft Store Chenille, Custom painted Sculpin Helmets and Rabbit hair. Among these are JC’s Rabbit Tail Chenille Sculpin, The Pygmy Sculpin, The Soft Tail Sculpin and JC’s Halfback Sculpin.
Lately John has been working with Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, who has been filming instructional videos of some of John’s “Original” patterns. Mostly a Trout fisherman by nature, John ties flies now for anything that swims. Custom orders are John’s specialty, but he does tye commercially, at times for Shannons Fly and Tackle in Califon NJ and Dettes Fly Shop in Roscoe and Livingston Manor NY. John has been a member of the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild for close to twenty years, and has been a professional Fly Tyer on the Fly Fishing Show’s eastern circuit, for the past 10 years John will not release anything to the public, unless he has had success with the flies he's come up with. John’s motto is "Flies That Catch Fish, Not Just Fishermen". He is also a member on several Pro Staffs, namely Regal Vise, Anglers Sport Group, Solarez UV Resins, and Flymen Fishing Company, among others.
John states: Being Humble about my tying is the way I roll. I still can get better and learn much more.
Fly Tying is like fly Fishing, in the respect that you will never learn it all in your lifetime.
And if you think you do, I’m sure you’re mistaken.
